Occupy What?

As I drove to Sacramento on my way to work today, radio news covered how the San Francisco police were starting to clear the Occupy SF camp at Justin Herman Plaza.

I know a lot of people have mixed feelings towards the Occupy Movement. I am one of those people. Many of us do not know what to make out of the unclear message and goal of the movement. Yet, we all agree that the government has huge misgivings which result to inequities and furthering of the gap between the rich and poor.

I suggest that rather than continuously wonder about how to make sense of things that are happening, or just forget and move on like nothing has happened, maybe make sense and do something about what it is that we know.

1. There are inequities and it will always be there.
2. The gap between the rich and the poor is continuing to widen.
3. WE CAN DO SOMETHING HELP FILL THE GAP.

So what can we do?

1. If you have the means, DONATE TO CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS that are filling the gap to services the government aren't able to fill.
2. VOLUNTEER your time if you don't have the resources to make monetary donations.
3. Participate in CIVIC ENGAGEMENT through elections, community boards, advocacy, etc.

If you are not actively participating to move the needle of the conversation to the next level, you really don't have a right to complain about what's going on. Simply paying for your taxes doesn't make you a good citizen, you are just a participant. Occupy soup kitchens, your bank account, your local board of supervisor meetings.    Occupy in a meaningful way.

What matters?

Before I went to bed last night, I asked myself if I should get caught up with the process of doing good or all that matters is that I'm doing good.

I question myself everyday whether I'm doing something meaningful for others and how. Yet I start looking at friends and everyday people and they all have kindness in their hearts.

Yet another existential dilemma. Or is it?

Should I?

Something crossed my mind tonight. Doing work for corporate philanthropy again. Should I?

Back to Square One

Almost done with grad school and internship. What to do I do next? Three things I know for sure:

1. I am passionate about helping solve issues related to poverty and inequality.
2. I am interested in doing public policy analysis and research.
3. I love San Francisco!

Today, I will look at what is out there. Thoughts?
